Original regulator and generator work fine now. Again took the wires between the regulator and generator off to check them and discovered that they were shorting each other inside the harness. Didn't even think of checking that the first time. Oh well, the electrical system should be in tip-top shape for the next few years; and the afternoons of frustration are forgotten in the moment of joy when everthing works... thanks Bob
