Points and starter

I've got a Super C and I've got 2 questions. First, this is the first time I've changed the points. I can't seem to get them to line up with one of the lobes on the distributor cam. Every time I hit the starter it ends up on one of the flat sides. Help!
Question 2. I seem to have a dead spot on my starter. I suppose the brushes aren't making contact or something. Most of the time it starts fine, but sometimes it just clicks. If I rock it back and forth in gear I can sometimes get it to work again. However, right now I'm really having a hard time with it. Can I clean or replace the brushes or do I need to replace the starter?
