If all your troubles began after the engine overhaul. why not take it back to the "mechanic"??
Perhaps the camshaft is not in time with piston movement.
Next time it stalls, pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap and crank the engine while holding the wire end 1/4" from a ground. If the spark is bright blue, your trouble is most likely in the fuel or compression department.
As was mentioned, ignition timing has to be correct before blaming other things.
Remember, if you are going to diagnose a situation, use your head before throwing parts at the problem.
