Paul One major assumption is that the valve train is working properly. By removing the valve cover and spinning the engine slowly, you can see obvious problems. On any old tractor that had set for long time, all filters and fluids should be changed. Since the M is a diesel, the engine had to run on gas before switching to diesel. I would recomend that you remove spark plugs, have start lever on gas (so third valve will be open) and crank the engine. You can remove the valve cover and watch for oil in the rocker arms. As far as the diesel system is concerned, bleed all air after changing the filter and bleed injector lines. The old diesel will not corrode or decay the fuel injector pump. We have started old IH diesels that have set for 5 years and the diesel system is not a problem. Water condensation in the system is and the gas system is a major headache. Before trying to start the tractor, check ignition system and plugs. The gas tank, fuel line and carb will probably have to be cleaned. The butterfly shutoff in the intake manifold needs to completely block the air intake for the carb to work properly. If it does not, the engine will never start. Lat week, we started and operated a IH TD-18A crawler that had set for 5 years. It took alot of fiddling and cleaning but the old girl finally bellowed to life. Such a beautiful sound when switching from gas to diesel. Good luck Ray
