The thing to watch out for on the old gas start diesels is the head, they have a tendency to crack if the operater doesn't take time to let them cool down after running. Also the TA is more than likely out in low range.The parts for these engines are becoming harder and harder to find also, there are some people on here that can give you the cost to rebuilding one of these engines, it isn't cheap. I purchased my 450D last year for $1700 and it has a new clutch, TA, and the engine was rebuilt not to many years ago, but the tires are shot. Not long after that I had a chance to buy another 450D that ran (not very good) with the low side of TA out and bad tires for $900. I wouldn't give over $500 for the one you described.
