You mentioned that you "drained the crud from the tank" but didn't mention how you drained it. If by chance you only drained the tank with the bowl removed, take the whole strainer assembly out. You will probably find crud in the strainer inlet. Wash out the tank again with the strainer assembly out. Good luck!!
