There is a very good possiblity that the diesel injector pump has a bad seal and is leaking diesel fuel into the crank case. First thing is change the oil in the crank case. Be sure to change the filter too. Before you change the oil, check the level if it is high, you may be leaking the diesel fuel. The proper level on the crank case oil is checked with the dip stick. Unscrew the dipstick and wipe it off. then reinsert but do not screw it in then withdraw and check level. In your case, I would use a 30 wt oil rated ro diesel service. The manual calls for 20 wt in the MD up to 90 degrees, but since you have low oil pressure, try the 30 wt. I am using Shell Rotella T 15W-40 in my MD. Also, take the oil gage off and check to be sure the line to it is not stopped up and that it is working properly. If it's none of these things, then it's the oil pump or some other internal engine problem such as worn bearings. I drove an MD many hours when I was a boy. The oil pressure gage on it always ran against the high peg when at full throttle. I have one now that I restored and it is the same. The gage only drops to mid range when the engine is at idle. According to the MD service manual I have, the engine oil pressure is supposed to be 60 to 70 psi. Also, the manual says there is a spring loaded oil pressure regulator valve located in the base of the oil filter housing. It's contained behind a retainer nut in the front side of the base. Good Luck. I really suspect your problem is thin oil due to diesel fuel leaking into the crank case and if not that, a bad pressure gage especially if the thing seems to be running normally.
