I've tried both a disc and a subsoiler over and around stumps. If the stumps are pretty rotten a good, heavy, weighted disc will cut them up several inches down. Of course, if its some hard massive oak stump you'll just ride over it for several years. If the stumps aren't very soft (or even if they are) you can use a subsoiler very carefully in low making seveal passes around the stump to break the lateral roots (doesn't work much on pine though) and eventually pull out the stump. But you've got to be carefull not to bite off too much or you will tear up your hitch or you subsoiler. Better have a heavy duty subsoiler some soft bolts in the hitch to shear.
