Joe - If you are already running 12 volts and your coil and points have not burned out yet, you've probably got a "12 volt" coil and thus don't need a ballast resistor. You must go negative ground with an alternator - that's inherent in the standard GM alternator design. The warning light is required because the alternator won't work with out one. If you leave it out the alternator won't charge. If you bypass the lamp (wire direct from the ign switch to the alternator #1 terminal) the tractor won't shut off when you turn off the ign switch. You can substitute a resistor (12 ohms, 5 watt or higher) for the lamp, but I find it's easier simply to use the warning light. As for wiring the ammeter, simply try it. If it reads backward then swap the wires on both terminals.
