On the 300/350/400/450 utilitys, the live PTO unit is a large canister that bolts to the back of the rear end housing. The controlling level on the right of the tractor goes to this housing, thru a linkage. Anyway, there are two band clutches in that housing. One stops the outside of the planetary gear, making the PTO spin (just like an automatic transmission). The other is supposed to stop the PTO from spinning, by cinching down around a brake drum. If the bands are out of adjustment, the PTO may still spin when you mean for it to be disengaged, and it may not pull full load when you mean for it to be engaged. You can tell when this happens because the guy will be driving along, bush-hogging, while pulling up on the lever to keep the thing from slipping too much. Not the best thing for band life. Solution to both is to adjust bands. Thats a little complicated to explain here (and you don't want to get it wrong), so suggest you buy or borrow a manual. IMHO, the I&T manual for the 300/350/400/450 IHs was good, so maybe the manual for the 340 would be also. I assume YT (sponsor of this board) could sell you one.
