Why is my generator green!?!?!

took the generator off of my M tonight and it looks like it had been painted green at one time. Are generators very interchangeable? it seemed to fit in with the rest of the tractor pretty well. the generator pulley had an IH stamp on it but i could not see any on the generator. if i paint this one red, would anyone be able to tell if it was not original IH? thanks! jeff
