They do happen.... My '49 M developed a head crack at the exhaust seat of (I think)the #3 cylinder about 25 years ago. IH dealer sent the head to somewhere in Illinois where it was welded. Seats were then machined and it hasn't developed any problems since. Doesn't do much work anymore, but it was worked pretty heavily for over 10 years after that episode.
