Cracked heads on the old "M" are common. Some cracks on these old tractors are no proplem, Most M heads will show cracks coming from the coolant passages and they will not hurt anything. The cracks that need serious welding are the bigger ones in the combustion chambers. I have a SMTA that has some hairline cracks in the combustion chambers. I found these last summer when I installed a new set of rings, and did a valve job. I decided to give the old cracked head a try, and if there were any problems it would not be that hard to slip the head off and send it to Williams Cylinder Head in Iowa for welding. Guess what? She runs just fine, no leaks and last fall, I used this tractor for plowing so she gets a good work-out.
