Here's what I think, put new oil in spring if you don't intend to use the tractor in the winter. I live in Manitoba and if I want to use the tractor in winter I'd put lower viscosity oil in it. If you replace the old oil with new and then let it sit all winter you'll end up with water in it from condensation. Why waste the oil. Alot depends of course on how many hours you typically put on the tractor. Also, drain the carb and fill the tank before storing.
