Domed pistons were usually for high altitude use. western Kansas and east Colorado is very high up even though it looks like flatland, and regular pistons used out there will result in bad performance with big loads. There are many places around the country than needed the extra compression because of altitude. The higher you go , the thinner the air and the domed pistons give a little extra squeeze. Tractors with high altitude pistons will pull a little better at sea level but also might be more prone to detination(pinging, spark knock) problems when working hard and hot.
