Paul, You should be fine by just installing the new 1/4" seal flush with the outside. I have doubled up new seals in places like bull pinion shafts etc. but feel it just gave me a "warm fuzzy" knowing that now I have two seals where there was only one before. Seal technology has improved significantly since those old fiber/rubber seals were used. Another hint would be to make sure the rubber lip on the new seal rides on the shaft in a different location that the old seal rode.//FB
