Check all the tie rods and the steering arm that is attached to the shaft that comes out of the bottom of the steering gear for play. If any of that is loose, especially the attachment of the arm to the steering gear shaft, tighten it up. However, I think your problem is likely in the steering gear. Check to see that the big plug on the front of the steering gear is tight. It has a large hex on it to apply a wrench. In fact, you really need to take that plug out (drain the oil out of the steering gear first) and investigate. Once you have the plug out, you can turn the steering wheel and screw the worm gear out far enough to check the thrust bearing that is on the end of the shaft just inside the plug you took out. It's held on with a castle nut that has a cotter pin through it. I'm betting that the bearing is worn out and has a lot of play. It costs less than $10 for a new bearing. If it's not fixed by this, then you are into taking the steering box off and a complete rebuild.
