Your tractor will start nicely wheather it has a generator on it or not (providing the battery is atleast partially charged). It is the stored energy in the battery that does the starting. The generator replaces the energy that has been drained from battery. An M can be started several times and run for several hours on a fully charged 12 volt battery even if the generator isn't charging at all. My M has 12 volt battery without generator hooked up. I charge the battery up with a battery charger and can get by for quite awhile on one battery charging. That is of coarse without using lights and trying to avoid multiple starts. The best way to check if the generator is charging without testing equipment would be to run the tractor for a length of time with the lights on. And maybe doing some multiple start ups over that span of time. Multiple start ups and light useage would be a sure way to put some drain on the battery. Over a span of time you will notice if the battery is losing its charge, which would tell you that the generator is not doing its job. Note that starting tractor and running it all day will not put much of a drain on the battery. It will take more juice to start it than running it all day. I have had dead battery's that wouldn't turn the tractor over, and I hand cranked it up and drove it all day with a distributor. The distributor doesn't put much drain on the battery and doesn't require alot of juice to make the distributor throw a spark. But anyway, thats what I would do for the time being untill you get that amp guage put on.

Out of the yard, over the cows and bale piles, through the dozer piles, poplars, and brush, out onto the ditch grade road, past the noisy 6.2 diesel engine pulling my well traveled Suburban along. Well it sure didn't take me long to figure out what it was because I alrea
