H transmission fun!

Was doing some dragging of the field a couple of days ago and noticed that the transmission was starting to stick in reverse if I was not careful. Would jiggle the gear shift and then it would shift into first.
On Friday my 19 year old was out pulling stumps (small ones) with the H and when we found it on Saturday it was locked up. Could not shift it into another gear and it would not roll or move.
So we pulled the seat, steering post, pulley, starter switch plate and the deck. Sure enough it had two gears engaged at once. After some investigation it was apparent that the end of the gear shift had worn down after 50 years of use. So we dragged out the welder and the grinder and welded up the end of the gear shift and then ground it smooth. Put it all back together and it was still locked in first first. Shifted it around and got it to move in 3rd gear. So we drove it up the shop. By the time we got it to the shop we could only get to shift between 4th and 5th.
Pulled the Pulley off of the H and put my hand in the transmission and found the 2nd and 3rd gear cluster moved back and forth freely. Conclusion was that we did not get the shift fork onto the 2nd and 3rd gear cluster. So off everything comes again. Realign the gear clusters and then set the deck back on. Shifted all of the gears this time with hand int he transmision through the pulley opening to make sure that nothing was loose and everything was shifting properly.
4 hours later we had the H back up and running in the field pulling the drag. Hope to not get back into the transmission for another 50 years, but I suspect ther emay be a bearing or two to replace befor then.
