If you have the style that looks similar to a mushroom, with wire screen on the underside , the cap has a short pipe that just slides down inside the riser tube. There are no threads or clamps. It is a tight fit and may need some penetrating oil if it has not been off for many years.
While you have it off check the riser tube to see if it anything built up on the inside. Mine was about 75% blocked with a very hard oily residue.
