Dan: I forgot to suggest a compression test. Thats near zero cost if ya can borrow a guage. If all cylinders are within 10 or 15 percent of each other and above say maybe 95 pounds, your "top-end" is good enough for mowing grass. You can burn oil thru poor rings..and poor valve guides. Often smoke upon startup is from worn guides dripping(sucking) oil down into combustion chamber. Research the archives or keep reading this forum and you'll get quite an intro to overhauling your engine. It's a good engine and complete kits and manuals are common. ralph
