Sven - A few quick things to do first: 1 - Make sure all the wiring connections are correct, both at the generator and at the regulator. 2 - Make sure the rgulator base is solidly grounded. 3 - Polarize the generator (use a jumper to connect the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator for an instant). If that doesn't cure the problem, start and run the motor at 1/2 throttle. Connect a jumper wire between the BAT and GEN terminals at the regulator. If the the system now charges, the regulator is no good. If that doesn't do it, connect the jumper between the generator F terminal and a good ground. If the system now charges, the problem's again with the regulator. If it still does NOT charge, something's wrong with the generator. Good luck!

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
