There is a u joint type connecter at the rear of the center tube just in front of the transmission. Seems like it consists of rubber bushings, tappered bolts and nuts. I rebuilt the one on my SC about 4 years ago. More than likely the problem is in this area. I had a 200 which is very similar that sheeled the center teeth on the bull gear (Right Hand) about 20 years ago. The tractor still moved but made a lot of clicking nioises. To fix this involves pulling the top off the rear end/ transmission and pulling the affected axle housing and the affected brake and pinion shaft. Pretty self evident once you pull the top off. The u joint type coupling will mean splitting the tractor not at the clutch but at the transmission connection. The main drive shaft will come out of the pilot bearing and clutch disc and be exposed after you move the front half of the tractor about 3 feet forward. Pulling the axle housing is almost a two man job if you have no hoist. Regardless what has happened, sounds like you are in for some heavy labor.
