My 230 made a thunk and now won't move in any gear?????

While filling the loader in first gear the machine made a gentle thud and stopped. Now it won't move in any gear though the clutch still has normal feel. I wasn't really reefing on the thing either. The sound and sensation was much like a machine popping out of gear when you don't have it engaged quite all the way. It was too dark to mess with it and so haven't looked at it yet. What are the possibilities here? A friend of mine says they have some sort of universal joint between the trans and the rear end that pops a U joint. I'm betting on having to split the beast.
