Jane you should only hook up one wire from the negative side of the ampmeter to the bat terminal on the voltage regulator. Use the heavier of the two gauges. Let the other wire hang loose. The second wire from the negative side of the ampmeter should go through the coil switch to the coil. You will need a third wire from the negative amp post to the light switch terminal. The hot wire from the starter switch goes to the positive side of the ampmeter. Did you get a 12 volt regulator?
