A few years ago I used my M Farmall to turn a belt on a stationary buzz saw. That was kind of a fun time even though it meant work. I have also used a belt numerous times to start another tractor. I didn't know there was elaborate formulas like listed below on these other posts to figure out what belt and pulley's you always needed. These may come in real handy in the future. I do know that when starting another tractor with a belt you got to have one twist in it. It makes sense to me to have a belt the same width as your pulley's. I don't see the need to have one wider or narrower than the pulley. Gravity is the bigger reason for a longer belt. The longer it is, the more tension is going to be on the pulley which will help eliminate slip. And like pulley's on anything else, the diameter will affect speed and rpm.
