flat belt use

Well this morning I played with my WD-9 and a flat belt to run a big saw. Everything worked fine for what I know about it all. But my question is; How does one learn what length and width belt to use for any given job or tool? I mean I just used a belt the neighbor had on his farm but it seemed way too long (thirty-six feet)for the saw. The farmer had last used it on his silo filler. Anyone willing and able to give me a short course in proper flat belt etiquette? Thanks much.
