The Allis Chalmers D21 was the first row crop turbo over 100 hp. The D19 was the first turbo that I'm aware of but it was under 100 hp. The 1206 was the first over 100 hp IH tractor. Deere's 5010 and 5020 were not turbo charged and were slow moving old dogs. There was one in our area (5020) and I worked in the same fields with my 1206. The 1206 would run circles around that 5020. The 5020 was similar to a 1030 Case regarding engine response. Deere wasn't able to build a reliable turbo charged engine until the 30 series. The ads in the papers for Deere tractors in the early seventies used to read like this "For sale-4520 diesel, 1508 hours, new engine" or like this-"low hour 4520 diesel- fresh overhaul". This applied to even the early 4430's and 4630's. One friend spent $7000 on his 4630 engine one time. The 361 and 407 IH engines however would run forever. Don't want to ruffle any JD feathers but no one could ever explain this fact about early JD turboed engines to me. They would side step the issue and want to discuss IH ta problems instead. TA's were cheaper to replace than new engines.
