The reason you saw a lot of JD 4520 engines replaced, within 1500 hours, was because of a tendency for the air filter to catch fire and put ash, etc, directly into the engine, resulting in a quick failure. The engines were replaced under warranty, by John Deere, with 4620 engines, and a different air filter system, which ended the problem. The air cleaner problem was because of a desire to eliminate the airstack (for esthetic reasons) by Henry Dreyfus (he was Raymond Loey"s counterpart---he was the man responsible for the styled letter series of JDs) who disliked the stack. It didn't work, so the otherwise decent 4520 only lasted two seasons and became the 4320 and 4620. All three, 4520,4320, and 4620 were the result of a desire, by John Deere, to have a turbo tractor, positioned to compete with the 1206/1256. The 5010/5020 engines, while powerful, did not have a good throttle response, and putting a turbo on one gave a LOT more hp than the 1206/1256. (A turboed 5020 and a 6030 are about the same thing---and MOST 6030s put out well above 200hp) Personally, I think that the 4520 was better than it's reputation. Any 4520 today would be long past having any question of it's engine reliability needing to be taken into account. (Sort of like how those rear end failures in 560s got taken care of---one of them, today, has most likely already had it's upgrade installed)
