advice on H wiring 6 volt

I have a rebuilt generator and I ran some 10 ga wires to switch. I wired gen as book said.
My regulator is mounted on top of the generator. I tried polorizing generator by touching a jumper from "bat" terminal to "a" gen terminal. Using a multimeter I can't seem to get a good reading off the generator just get real jumpy readings. I don't know what I am doing wrong. My books I have don't have good wiring diagrams at all. Does anyone now where to get a good description of wiring a 6 volt generator system. I would like A-Z instuctions. I'm learning as I go so that doesn't help much.
