I'm not sure on the actuall clearance becuase my manuel is at my other residense but I think the exhaust is different than the intake. You set the clearance close and then warm the tractor up and shut it off and then do the final setting with engine warmed up. Make sure the valves are completly closed when setting the gap. You will have to turn the engine over accordingly as you go from valve to valve. Silicone will work on the oil pan but it is a sure bet that a drippy leak will eventually show up. Silicone may be cheaper but the gasket would be the best way to go. You'll get what you pay for. If you need the actuall clearance specks let me know and I'll look in that manuel I got.
