Larry, You can do the mains with engine in frame but I would would strongly suggest using plasti-gauge when reinstalling the caps. Some folks have mentioned the crank can sag doing it this way. I would do the center thrust bearing first and then the front and rear mains one at a time. You have to roll the top half of the old bearing around the crank. I use a fairly sturdy but flexible piece of plastic to do this so I don't score the journal. Definately recommend you get a service manual if you don't have one. They are worth the money and then some. Look real close at the back side of the bearing for markings. Should see "STD" or 0O1, 002 etc. They should also have a date stamped on them.
