When we got our M, back about 1965, Dad took one look at the shifter and decided that he would like to shift it with his right hand the way God intended. The local welding shop heated and bent it, several times, until it could be shifted right handed, and not pinch fingers or hit anything. It now has kind of a Z shape, offset to the right. As I remember, in the original shape, you couldn't hold the clutch in and go from reverse to first, unless you were extremely bowlegged. Of course my legs were shorter then, and it was quite a trick for me to push the clutch in at all.
