1086 overheat

The light that signals that the tractor is hot
comes on on my 1086 I dont think that the other
water temperature gauge works right and I'm going
to put in a new sensor next week. The gauge stays
real low all of the time. But when the light came
on there was no reason for it to be hot and it
didnt act hot or anything. I took off the radiator
cap and even stuck my finger in and it was just
warm. What signals that light to come on?
Another thought I had was does this tractor have a
thermostat which could possibly get stuck?
