D239 white smoke

I am resigned to this engine smoking: a newly rebuilt D239 in a 574(redone top & bottom, magnafluxed, rebuilt injectors - original intection pump checks out). The usual: smokes white until hot (30 min) then no smoke at all except black when it's pulling hard. To no avail, I've tried advancing and retarding the pump timing by loosening the two nuts and turning it each way (by the way does anybody know which way you turn it to retard the timing?) My neighbors with the new diesel tractors (i.e.: only 15 years old) just kind of look at me as the underslung exhaust blows smoke up my hat during implement hookup time. I guess this was meant to be. Other than that, it's a handsome tractor. I would suppose my John Deere/Kubota neighbors would agree when it's not running.
