Ray your problem with that particular tractor is low compression. Believe me I worked on them and I know. We had the same problem with the new 686d, when it came out. You know they even came out with a piston kit to repair the problem. I was the only one in our area that figured out the problem. They made the pocket in the top of the piston for the air to compress in 1/8 inch larger in circumference and 1/8 inch deeper. Which increased the area and lowered the compression ratio. I cannot tell you if a piston from a 310d, engine or a piston from a 358d will work, but it seems to me one or the other should work. They are from the German engine works. We had the same trouble with replacements for the 310's and 358's. I got to the point of reringing the old pistons to get away from the problem. They never smoked, and started much easier, without pulling on the excess fuel lever. Good luck. Let me know what you find.
