You have to get the exhaust pipe water tight where it enters the manifold. In a rainstorm a lot more water can run down outside of mufler and exhaust pipe than what could enter the top of mufler if it was not covered. You also can get water off hood taking the same route. Look at the square inches of collection area. I once had a Farmall 300 fill with water same way, it froze. Had to put tractor in shop for three days with sparkplugs out to thaw. It had been -20 F. very lucky no damage.
