Karl - As Lloyd indicates, ALL alternators have regulators. 1st generation Delcos used external, mechanical (relay type) regulators. The 2nd generation (the xxSI family) are equipped with internal, solid state regulators. Both systems work fine - the external wiring for either type is about the same. However my experiece has been the 10SI tends to be somewhat more reliable as the regulator has no moving parts or electrical contacts to wear out.

Location - also the presence/absence - of ballast resistors varies with application. I've seen resistors screwed to adjacent sheet metal, bolted directly to the coil, mounted near the voltage regulator, etc. Some applications use a piece of resistance wire in the primary harness instead of an external resistor. Others dispense with a ballast resistor entirely by using a so-called "12 volt" coil - one which is designed to operate directly off 12 volts.
