My Tractor turns itself off

I have a 1950 industrial grade Farmall tractor.
Recently it started acting piculiar, it will run for about 3 minutes, back fire a couple times and then turn itself off.
I stood at the side and watched what happens: Where the throttle mechanism is on the side of the engine, there is a rod that comes down from the top and it overrides the throttle setting and cuts off the gas.
How can I fix this?
