The starter shop is right - you can't simply stick a generator on a stand and determine the design voltage. However since your tractor has 12 volt lights, chances are pretty good the charging system has been converted 12 volts. Here's how I'd verify: 1 - Get the all the wiring to the generator, voltage reg and ammeter connected correctly. 2 - Drop in and connect a charged 12 volt battery. At this point it doesn't matter which battery post you connect the grounded battery cable to. 3 - Turn on the lights and look at the ammeter - it should show a few amps of discharge. If it shows charge, swap the two cable connections at the battery. 4 - Now polarize the generator (use a short jumper wire to momentarily connect the BAT and GEN terminals at the voltage reg) 5 - Finally start the tractor, run it at 1/2 speed or higher and check the ammeter. If it indicates charge, you're all set! If it does not.... 6 - With the motor running at about 1/2 max RPM, jumper the regulator FLD terminal to a good ground, then jumper the regulator GEN and BAT terminals together. If the ammeter now shows charge, get a new 12 volt regulator. If it still does not charge, you've either got a 6 volt generator or the generator itself is no good. Hope this helps....

Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
