If you do not have a belt pulley on the tractorit makes it a little simpler. At any rate remove the cover or belt pulley. Looking into the transmission, move the lever from fourth to fifth and watch the upper trans shaft, the mainshaft. If it kind of jumps up when moving it to fourth gear, the pilot bearing end of your mainshaft has broken off. Quite common on the M's and H's as they were used quite hard. They used to drill that mainshaft and tap it so you could replace the end peice and save it. That is also the drive gear for the differential. One other problem might be the spring has broken for the poppet that on the shift rail. You will not feel a detent when you put it in gear. Good luck.
