Good posts! Except don't worry about the starter. It is not a light buld, it is a motor. It does not get hot and will not burn up running on 12v. Crank till you drain the battery then jump it. Since the load is the same (turning over the engine) and the voltage is greater, the motor only draws half the amps. (Maybe a little more since the starter is turning the engine faster but I doubt load is directly proportional to rpm.) But I can tell you from 30 years of cranking engines under all conditions with 6v starters running on 12v: it is not a problewm for the starter. I've not had ring gear problems particularly but have had to replace the Bendix on a few tractors. It is always interesting that a D-C starter motor will turn the right way regardless of the battery polarity.
