If you ever have the occasion to pull that axle housing, you will likely find a little chunck of cast iron broken off and rattling around in the open space below the axle. Those holes are blind, and when someone puts in a bolt that's too long and keeps twisting it in until it bottoms in the hole, it will break out the casting underneath. Clean out the threads, put in a bolt to plug it, and don't worry too much about it. It takes more adversity than that problem to cripple an M!
