The rest of the story is: -1486 has wider bull gears 3/4 inch wider than 986 -axle bearings are bigger -rearaxle on 1486 is 3 1/2 inches vs 3 1/4 for 986 -crown and pinion are heavier and made of higher grade steel to transmit more HP -bull pinion bearings (I think)are larger -1,2,3,4 gears are the same but the bearings are larger capacity The only two IH models of this era that have the same innards were the 786 and 886. The 1086 and 1486 were similar in the rear end but the 1486 had the 1/4 inch longer stroke crankshaft In short IH was cagey. They made them look the same but they are all different and if you boost power you will run into driveline problems. The same is true of the 7100, 7200 and 8900 Magnums. The xx10, xx20, xx30/xx40, and xx50 size all have different final drive assemblies. For the Maxxum the situation is different. I am told the MX100,110,and 120 are all the same tractor. Just crank up the fuel and you can make a MX120 out of a MX100

"Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
