Don't know about having to close up the openings on an M, but we ran an H without a belly pump in it on an old bridge style farmhand for years without anything covering the opening. Another H that we had that came without a pump when it was new had a cast plate over the pump's opening in the bottom of the housing and corks in the fill & plumbing holes.
