I don't think a "slightly" loose connection would have done that. Probably the best thing you can do is to replace the bulbs and watch the system closely. If the ammeter is bouncing around a lot (indicating that there is a change in current flow to or from the battery) there is either a change in the circuit load (resistance) or in the output voltage. (Ohm's law) I still think the most likely problem is a bad regulator causing output from the generator to vary. Like Tractor Vet said, the wiring harnesses are cheap and easy to replace and on a nearly 50 year-old tractor, you have little to lose by changing it.
