Frank, when you say the starter checks out OK, I assume that someone in the know has pronounced it to be good. When you crank that thing over, check the connections at the starter, both battery posts and the point of ground for heat. Be careful, could be damned hot. If you find intense heat, you have connection problems. Put a hand crank to it. Does it take three men and a boy to turn it over? Maybe there's a problem there. Polarize that generator. Even a good generator can get confused. If the juice is going the wrong way, even with the tractor running, the generator will attempt to behave like a motor and it's good by battery and eventually, good buy generator. Just a note, I've had starters proclaimed good that weren't. I've had batteries give all indications of being good that weren't. If all else fails, start replacing these components one at a time, process of elimination will flush out the culprit.
