Frank, I would go through all the electrical connections. Make sure all the rewiring that was done is at least #14 stranded wire. The battery cable should be at least #2 guage, I would recomend #1 for battery cables, most auto cables are #4 wire, These are not heavy enough for the amperage drawn on 6 volt systems. I have seen alot of tractor cables with the insulation melted off them from extended cranking and poor connections. Also take your battery and have it checked with a load drawn on it. This will determine if the battery is any good or not. Keep your engine in a good state of tune and the 6 volt system should work just fine.
