F-12 runs bad

Hello, I used to think that I was pretty good at troubleshooting my old F-12's but I have one that I absolutely can't figure out. It will run good for a while then it will sound like the motor is pulling down to the point of almost seizing up...then it will start running smooth again..It has a new magneto, rebuilt carberator...the valves are all set at about 15 thousandths...I've had the tractor for about 3 years and it always was a good runner....
Any ideas.....is it possible that the camshaft gear that hits the main crankshaft is maybe wore and about ready to fall off the end of the camshaft....Any help would be greatly appreciated.
