Jerry, if you're going to cure those leaks, you probably have no choice but to get in there and start replacing bearings. The deck isn't as heavy as it would seem, it's mostly clumsy and awkward. I have no experience with the 400 but I did have an M once with that seal problem and you could actually move te pinion up and down, etc. The supporting bearings were shot and so I did nothing. This winter I did do my 340 and though it's a ton of time and a hell of a mess, it's not the end of the world.
